It’s 26 degrees Celsius in Mexico City today. More than enough incentive to escape the cold rain and snow of Victoria this Spring Break. If you are planning an escape to Mexico with the kids, you will be glad to know Mexico City’s tourist industry has been ramping up their services with an eye towards families and younger guests. Hotels that were once catering only to business travellers are starting to bring in more exhibits, events and programming for children.
In the heart of one of the world’s largest city, you will find the largest urban park in Latin America with many museums, restaurants, a zoo and plenty of paths for biking, walking and running.
There is at least a half dozen museums that cater to families. Three really stand out as favourites:
Papalote Museo del Niño
You and your kids will easily spend an entire day at the Papalote Museo del Niño – a children’s museum with over 150 interactive exhibits featuring science, technology and art for children. It houses a large garden where you will find many of plants of Mexico’s abundant ecosystems. A favourite for kids is called the Ramon Tree which will teach you about Mexico’s array of forest ecosystems.
Mucho Museo del Chocolate
If you and your kids share an affinity for chocolate, (and who doesn’t?) try the Mucho Museo del Chocolate, the Chocolate Museum describes the rich history of cacao, and you kids will be delighted by the chocolate lab where they can craft chocolate sculptures with chocolate paste, or make their own Mexican chocolate by grinding cocoa beans on a volcanic stone.
The Museum of Popular Art allows kids to participate in workshop to make Mexican crafts such as piñatas. It’s a fantastic full culture immersion experience.
